It’s Friday, and if you’re looking for a way to get your heart-healthy exercise in, why not tackle a home improvement project this weekend? A 2023 study published in JAMA shows that even if you don’t spread your workouts across the week, concentrating your physical activity into one or two days—like the weekend—can still reduce your risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular issues. Whether it’s painting a room, gardening, or tackling that DIY project you’ve been putting off, it all counts as moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and can help protect your heart.
Don’t worry if you can’t find time to work out during the week. The key is reaching the recommended 150 minutes of MVPA over the course of the week, and you can get it all done this weekend!
Dr. Jimenez, a prevention expert, says: "Whether you’re exercising or working on a home project, what matters is getting those minutes in. The benefits to your heart and brain are the same, even if it's all done in one day. "
